Character
[Name:] Kaia Shiruzaki
[Nickname(s):] Kaia, K, Starfire, Star. Prefers Kaia or Starfire.
[Age:] 15
[Gender:] Female
[Career:] Ranger
[Pokémorph:] Absol
[Appearance:] The first thing people usually notice about Kaia is her eyes. The saying that the eyes are the window to the soul is completely wrong in Kaia’s case. She has violent red eyes, which always seem angry… hateful… cold… whereas her personality is almost the opposite. But we’ll get to that later. Besides her eyes, people also notice her hair, the pure white color of an Absol’s fur. It’s long, about waist-length, and is never put into any kind of hairstyle (though she wears it in a ponytail on occasion); it’s always straight.
Thick white fur, the same color as her hair, stretches down much of her body. It starts at her shoulders and wraps around her arms, then winds all the way down to her ankles (making it quite annoying when it’s hot out); her face, neck, hands, and feet are bare. Where there isn’t fur, there is cream-colored skin, as if she doesn’t get a lot of sunlight but gets enough to stop her from looking like a ghost. On her fingers and toes, instead of nails, are hard, dark-blue claws, which makes it difficult to wear shoes sometimes, as Kaia hates flip-flops and prefers tennis shoes.
Kaia does have a tail, but most of the time she wishes she didn’t, as it’s the hard, pointed Absol tail (it’s also kind of hard to sit down when you have something stiff and pointy sticking out of your lower spine). When she’s feeling extreme emotion, or senses a large disaster (earthquake, tsunami, etc.), an Absol’s horn appears on the side of her head (rather painfully, I might add), and disappears again when the feeling or disaster has passed (again, painfully). Kaia also has a tendency to walk hunched over, most likely due to the fact that Absol is a quadruped, and can’t stand up straight (a kind of slouch is the best she can manage when she tries, but since her spine is curved differently than a normal human’s, it hurts a lot and she can’t keep it up for too long).
As for clothing, Kaia is a simple, uneducated soul, who is pretty much fine wearing a t-shirt and pants (at least, she was, until her fur showed up). Most of the time she’ll be seen wearing a blue t-shirt with a black stripe going down the middle, her arms covered by a blue and white jacket, along with white denim pants (which have a slit for her tail), held up by a black belt for any Pokéballs. She also carries around a beaten knapsack that she uses to hold all her junk, along with an extra change of clothes. She is NEVER seen wearing tank-tops, skirts, makeup, dresses, flip flops, or jewelry, as she’s a tomboyish girl who isn’t interested in that sort of thing, and also sees it as somewhat impractical. However, she does have a black arrowhead that she’s somehow managed to tie to a bit of string, and is often seen clutching it when she’s lost in thought.
[Personality:] Kaia is a bit of an enigma, full of unknowns and contradictions, many of which have been a result of her… difficult past. No one can tell what she’s thinking, aside from her dæmon, and always seems to be lost in her own world. She’s calm and quiet most of the time, but can come off as a bit random when she’s in a happier mood. She likes to be on her own, and feels most comfortable among a small group of close friends, rather than a rowdy crowd. When she gets upset, she seems to shut down, practically paralyzed by her negative emotions, and when she’s in that state, it’s pretty much useless to try to get through to her. Only Kuroi can manage. But, as was said earlier, she’s calm and quiet most of the time, and is the kind of person that just follows the rules and goes with the flow. Like I said, her cruel red eyes are the complete opposite of her true personality.
Kaia believes the average (or as close as she can get to it) about herself, saying she’s not pretty, nor ugly, not smart, but not stupid, not human, but not a monster (even though sometimes it feels like it). You could say she’s in a half-state of denial. Her motto is “Sometimes it’s better to expect the worst; that way you won’t be disappointed.” Despite that, and her… rather unique ability, she tries hard to keep a positive outlook, and only turns pessimistic when either her ability kicks in, or something REALLY bad is about to happen/is happening.
Due to her special ability, something most people WOULD relate to Absols, if anything touches her, Kaia can see something horrible that happens to them in the near future. It happens frequently; the only things it doesn’t work on are certain Pokémorphs, her dæmon, and herself. Due to this, Kaia is terrified of even the slightest touch coming from someone except Kuroi. It paralyzes her. Though she hates it, it’s the main reason she’s decided to become a Pokémon Ranger. So she can use her ability to help people.
On a side note, Kaia doesn’t let her ability get her down (most of the time, anyway), and spends a lot of her free time drawing, reading, writing, playing video games, or playing cards (she switches between various Poker games and Yu-Gi-Oh!, as she finds them both quite interesting). She prefers reading and drawing fantasy-related subjects, and always carries her white DS around with her, along with some games and a charger. Yes, she’s a nerd, but she enjoys it. Also, due to her “artist-ness” as Kaia puts it, she has a slight OCD problem. If something’s not straight when it should be, she has to fix it or it bugs the crap out of her. Especially picture frames. If they’re just leaning the SLIGHTEST bit to the left, she has to straighten it.
[History:] Kaia has had a rather interesting past, some good, some… well, you’ll see. Now, as long as Kaia can remember, she’s been on her own. She doesn’t remember any parents. As this was a relatively uneventful point in her life, we’ll skip the first few years and move on to a more interesting period.
This starts out when Kaia was ten years old. She was an oddity, a natural Pokemorph, so she didn’t have too many Absol qualities at her age. Her fur was just starting to grow, and her tail, although visible, was still growing as well. Due to this fact, Kaia spent a lot of time wandering around but not running away, as she didn’t care what people thought of her at the time. Eventually, her wanderings led her to a tiny town in the Hoenn Region, one not even on the map.
She and Kuroi stayed there for a long time, befriending many of the residents (at least to some extent), including one specific boy. He was like her in the sense that he was the same age, and that he didn’t care that she was a Pokemorph. His dæmon’s name was Maka, and his was Ty. Kaia and Ty quickly became the best of friends, and got into all sorts of trouble together. Kaia enjoyed it, and although she didn’t know it, she had developed a bit of a crush on him. But all good things come to an end, and this was no exception.
Up to this point, when she was touched, it was just a touch. Nothing out of the ordinary happened. But Kaia was growing, and her Absol traits were developing in an unknown way within her. It was a simple thing, really. A simple high-five after they had managed to sneak a couple of candy bars out of the local shop. But a high-five was all it took. As soon as their hands connected, Kaia’s mind was filled with bloody images. At first, a boy wandering through the woods, then the same boy being mauled by a Houndoom, then the same boy lying on the ground, bleeding to death. And that boy was Ty.
Kaia shrieked and snatched her hand away from Ty’s, clutching her head in agony, tears flowing down her face. By her side, Kuroi was in Shinx form, clutching his head with tiny paws, his tail wrapped around him.
”Kaia! K-kaia, are y-you okay?” Ty stuttered, worried for his friend.
”No… no no no… nonononoNO!” Kaia shrieked, not even hearing his voice. She stood up and took off, running recklessly, not even noticing she was running into the same forest she had seen in her vision. In Linoone form, Kuroi streaked after her, followed closely by Ty and Maka in Starly form. Soon, however, Stream began to outpace them, and Ty and Maka slowed down, thinking they should probably leave Kaia alone for the time being. Swapping worried glances, they began to make their way back to the town.
Not far away, Kaia was sitting against the trunk of a tall oak, sobbing. Kuroi’s long furry body was wrapped protectively around her.
”I saw it, Kuroi… I saw… Ty… being attacked… by a… Houndoom,” Kaia moaned through her sobs.
”We should go back,” Kuroi advised carefully, nudging Kaia’s face with his snout. ”We should try to warn him.”
Kaia nodded, wiping away her tears. Kuroi switched to Furret form and climbed up onto her shoulders, wrapping himself around Kaia’s neck like a scarf. Slowly they began to make their way back, but stopped when they heard a low moan coming from the bushes on their right. Bending down to see what it was, she screamed and fell backwards, then immediately started dragging the figure out of the bushes. Kuroi jumped down and changed into a Lucario, pulling out the second figure, a bloody Mightyena.
Ty and Maka lay on the ground, cuts and bite wounds evident on each of their bodies.
Kaia was paralyzed, in a state of shock. ’This is all my fault!’ Kaia thought, her eyes blank. ’If I hadn’t run off… if I had warned him… he’d be okay!’
By some miracle, Kaia and Kuroi managed to drag them back to the town, and they survived, but Kaia had left straight after bringing them back and gone into hiding, convinced that it was her who had “killed” Ty. So it was for the next couple of years. Always hiding, always moving from place to place, terrified of her ability to kill people. Though, after a while, and after a couple more incidents, she found out the visions came from touch, and didn’t always kill someone. So she steadily began to come out into the open again, but concentrated on being aware of her surroundings so a vision wouldn’t sneak up on her.
Another noteworthy incident happened when she was thirteen, three years after her first vision.
It was literally a dark and stormy night. With nowhere to go, Kaia and Kuroi quickly searched for shelter to get out of the downpour, and soon found an old shed. Thinking that she could just stay there for a while and leave first thing in the morning, Kaia went inside and made herself as comfortable as she could. Trying to keep herself occupied, she pulled out her DS and did some Sudokus for a while, but in her state, sleep was inevitable. When she woke up, the door to the shed was open, and a girl about two or three years older than her was peering inside, looking down at her.
”What are you doing in our shed?” the girl asked. Her tone was curious, not accusatory. She had long black hair and amber eyes, and was dressed in simple black clothes. A Mightyena dæmon was at her side, also having amber eyes, looking at Kuroi (who was in Luxray form, as had become his usual) curiously.
”Uh…” was Kaia’s eloquent response.
The girl smiled. ”I’m Rin. You look soaked. You could come stay at my place for a while if you want,” Rin offered, offering her hand.
Kaia stared at it, unsure, then stood up on her own and said, ”Um, sorry, but I’m just not good with people touching me. I… I’m Kaia.”
”Well then, Kaia, let’s get you cleaned up.”
After that, the two became friends, and Rin made sure not to touch Kaia, though Kaia never explained why and Rin never asked. She was a strange girl, the kind that didn’t really like to pry into people’s privacy and kept to herself. She liked the color black, whereas Kaia liked blue, and Rin liked to listen to music and read magazines, whereas Kaia liked to read her own books in silence. The two were almost opposites, but they didn’t care, especially Kaia. After three years of solitude and fear, she found herself able to relax again.
In this case, however, that was a mistake.
The two were walking back to Rin’s house after having gone shopping together, and Kaia tripped. Rin reached down to help her up, and Kaia momentarily forgot that touch activated her ability. As soon as Rin’s hands made contact, Kaia saw a house on fire. Screams were coming from within, and a lone figure stood some distance away, watching the burning building collapse.
Kaia gasped in shock as she was pulled back onto her feet.
”What’s wrong?” Rin asked in confusion.
With a quick glance at Kuroi, who nodded at her, Kaia took a deep breath and explained in a slightly panicked voice, ”Something’s going to happen soon, Rin. Your house… it’s going to burn down! And your parents will still be inside!”
Rin looked at her oddly. ”What are you talking about?”
”Your parents are going to DIE!” Kaia exclaimed, getting more panicked as it became evident that Rin wasn’t exactly listening.
”You’re crazy. What makes you say that?” Rin retorted.
And here’s where Kaia made her second mistake. Instead of explaining properly, she choked up.
”Uh-huh, that’s what I thought. Nothing’s going to happen, you’ll see.”
So Kaia followed Rin back to her house in silence, unsure of what to do or say. One thing that bothered her about her visions was that she couldn’t tell exactly when it would happen, just that it would happen in the near future, which could mean in the next five minutes or in five days.
As it turned out, when they arrived at Rin’s house, Kaia found that she didn’t have to worry about that. The house was already on fire.
Rin’s bags slipped from her fingers as she stared in shock at her home. Soon, however, the shock in her eyes turned to anger and hate. She turned on Kaia, accusing her of causing this to happen. Her tone was hateful and angry.
”This was YOUR doing, wasn’t it! That’s how you knew about it! You were my friend and I trusted you! GET AWAY FROM ME!”
With each accusation, Kaia flinched, moving backwards.
”No! It wasn’t me! I swear! It wasn’t me! It wasn’t me! IT WASN’T ME!”
In the end, Kaia shamefully walked away, and looked back when she was far enough away. She saw what she had seen in her vision, the lone Rin watching her house collapse.
Since then, Kaia has never let another person get close to her, for fear of causing them pain. It was around this time that she decided to become a Pokémon Ranger, in a place far, far away from Hoenn, so that she might be able to help people and try and put her past behind her. Now, having just turned fifteen, Kaia has chosen to finally pursue her goal, and has arrived at the Enera Region, hoping for a fresh start.
The Dæmon

[Name:] Kuroi
[Settled Form:] Luxray
[Appearance:] Due to Kaia’s Pokémorph appearance, Kuroi has some odd traits as well. Instead of golden eyes, Kuroi's eyes are the same red as Kaia's. Also, his fur is a slightly lighter shade than other Luxrays.
[Personality:] Kuroi is serious and reserved most of the time, not really showing much emotion. However, he's always ready to switch his attitude based on Kaia's emotional state. For example, whenever she's freaking out, he's calm and in control.

((EDIT: Changed Kaia's dæmon's gender.))
