► Ajax grunted as he trudged across the flat, sandy stretch of sun-baked desert. It was hot, hot, hot. It had been interesting to observe the environment, positively glowing with light—Nyx had turned briefly into her Skarmory form to see how the sun reflected blindingly off of her polished white-silver feathers—but she soon had returned to her heat-tolerable Ninetails form, and Ajax quickly grew bored of his surroundings. Not to mention, the heat was exhausting him somewhat as well. Even though she had been wide awake earlier, Espi shifted in the Scizor ‘morph’s arms, feeling a bit sleepy. Still, she hadn’t even been off of Route 1 before, so since she was now traveling with a Trainer she trusted in a new area, she managed to keep herself awake. ”Ajax, let me down? I want to practice walking,” she requested resolutely. «

► The boy was surprised. ”The ground’s hot,” he said a little dubiously, looking down at his feet, which were uncomfortably warm. Somehow he felt like if he had normal human feet, they’d be painfully scorched by now, though he supposed that he’d be wearing shoes if he were 100% human. ”Well, as you wish.” He let Espi down so she could walk beside them. The shiny Zigzagoon shook herself, then made it a challenge to herself to stay underneath the flying Chatot’s shadow. Not only will it be practical, but it’ll be good training,

While she definitely wasn’t able to follow the shadow perfectly, or even as nimbly as a Zigzagoon with all its appendages, her maneuvering wasn’t too shabby either, especially for one who had only been released from the hospital a few hours earlier. Nyx allowed herself a small smile; it appeared that the find she and her human had made on Route 1 had promise. «

As Ajax, Nyx and Espi walked with the wild Chatot flying above, all continued quiet and boring. Chatot felt the sun's searing heat on his wings and back; a lot of the time it was a fantastic feeling to have the sun on you as you flew higher where the sun's path onto you wasn't disrupted, but here it was so unbelievably hot he wished there were a load of trees around, even if they were weird rock ones. His tongue was really dry, too, and he was fantasising about finding and oasis.

The parrot Pokémon was the first to notice something approaching from up high. He cawed down to Ajax, more an exclamaiton of excitement at something actually happening than anything else, and swooped lower to meet them. Before long, a Geodude and Digglet came into view.

Geodude nodded in greeting at Chatot, while Digglet blushed shyly. Geodude seemed fairy relaxed and talked confidently to him. He glanced over at Ajax, seeming very interested in Espi. Digglet was shier. ~Hey, trainer! Want help, or want a fight? Digglet here surprised me recently with this amazing victory!~

► At Chatot’s caw, Ajax stopped abruptly, Nyx halting simultaneously next to him. Espi stopped and sniffed, closing her eyes against the sand’s harsh light, but peering into the distance and focusing on Geodude and Diglett as they came closer. Ajax squinted as well. ”Help? A fight? What would you help us with? Actually, do you know if there’s water anywhere in this darned desert?” he asked frankly. Espi padded over, able to navigate through the shifting sand surprisingly well for one with three legs. ”Hi,” she said to both of them with as much confidence as she could muster, but feeling a bit self-conscious because of her missing limb. ”An amazing win? Who were you fighting against?” the shiny Zigzagoon asked politely, although she was also curious at whom the shy Diglett had managed to overcome. «

► Ajax shrugged, allowing the Pokemon to converse but understanding their speech. Even if they wanted a battle, he wasn’t sure he wanted to let Espi fight so soon, especially against those who she had a type disadvantage against. Of course, she’d want to fight, and he knew it would be only fair to let her. Unfortunately. Not to mention he didn’t want to lose—with Espi on her own she’d almost certainly lose—even though he wasn’t him fighting, he hadn’t lost in anything but board games for the past two years now. His hand balled into a light fist briefly but he soon released it, waiting for Espi’s conversation with the Geodude and Diglett to continue, sure that if they wanted a battle they’d profess it. Nyx simply stayed by his side and looked forward blankly, swiping her tongue around her heat-parched foxlike jaws. «

Geodude seemed quite enthusiastic about boasting on behalf of his friend. This conversation was going just how he liked it, although poor Diglett was feeling as self concious as Espi. ~He took down an Onix! A massive great big Onix! You know, them great big snakes made of rock.~

[/color] he responded proudly, making Diglett wonder why he travelled with the Pokémon until he reminded himself of how useful not being alone was. ~I ha a type advantage.~[/color] he said dismissively.

As for water, they had to admit they didn't know of any nearby. They found it easy to go long days without the stuff, but of course humans and non-desert dwellers in general would find that more of a problem. Geodude and Diglett exchanged glances, then looked back at Ajax. ~Not sure, I don't think there's any nearby. But if you dig deep enough you can usually find some.~[/color] Geodude spoke. ~Or of you can't dig, I think your claw could open a cactus. ► Ajax shrugged. ”I don’t have any Pokemon with Dig, sorry,” he said. ”Hm, but a cactus, that’s a good idea!” Snapping his pincer menacingly he looked around, spotting a midsize cactus twenty or so meters away. Nyx visibly perked up as they saw it, bounding towards it. Quickly Ajax could feel the uncomfortable tug signaling the loss of his dæmon’s presence beside him. Of course, he had done this a good number of times before, but it always felt as if someone had laced their fingers around his throat and were slowly tightening their grip. Nyx seemed uncomfortable too; mid-run she halted abruptly, looking back at Ajax and beckoning him with one of her tails. Distractedly Ajax said, ”I don’t mind if you keep talking, Espi, but let’s head over this way,” before jogging after Nyx. «

► Upon arriving at the cactus he looked at it carefully. The spines looked pretty painful, but he gingerly poked one with his claw and it easily clacked against the hard armor and slid off. Good. Grinning, he poked the cactus again, a little harder—just to make sure that it wasn’t a Pokemon—and then he wound up and took a good swing at it. There was a loud crunch as the sharp part of the claw cut into the cactus’s flesh, cracking it around the entire circumference two-thirds of the way up. Another heavy whack and the cactus split in two, the top flying off. Droplets ringed the rim. The rest of the cactus was filled about halfway full with water. ”Yes! Thanks, guys,” Ajax cheered and dipped his palm in, cupping it and bringing it to his mouth. After drinking he refilled all their water bottles. Nyx hopped up on the edge of the cactus and carefully lapped up the water, balancing well despite her nine poofy tails.«

► Meanwhile, Espi continued to talk with the two wild Pokemon. ”Wow, an Onix? That is quite impressive, even with a type advantage; they’re so huge!” Her paws shuffled against the sand nervously, but she really was impressed with Diglet’s victory. As Ajax moved away she prepared to dash (best she could) after them, saying, ”Thank you for your help, if you’d like to follow to the water please do.” she said dipping her head respectfully before going to Ajax to get her fill of the water as well. «

Geodude watched Nyx make for the cactus, followed by Ajax as he felt a twinge of pain from being too far away from his dæmon. He watched them drink for a moment before starting as Espi spoke. He seemed quite proud as she was clearly finding Diglett's victory impressive. The Rock and Ground type wasn't the best of friends with the mole Pokémon, but did admire him and hoped to learn a thing or two about battling from him- and already had, for that matter, from seeing the defeat of the Onix and gaining a couple of levels himself.

Diglett was more shy about this, glowing with embarasment at the praise. He was the sort who was used to not being thanked or congratulated for much, and felt very awkward when someone did so. That was one of the annoying things about Geodude tagging along with him, but the rocky Pokémon was easily impressed and Diglett had learned to live with it. Espi seemed like a sweet little Zigzagoon, and to be honest Diglett was feeling quite impressed with her because of how well she appeared to be coping despite apparently having recently lost a leg.

At the offer of water, the two Pokémon looked at each other and shrugged. They were only a little thirsty, as desert dwellers were naturally adapted to going without water for days at a time. It did seem tempting, however, and they didn't want to turn down any oppertunity at water, another thing occupants of the desert had learned. They followed the raccoon to the cactus, waiting for the others who needed the water more to drink before drinking their fill too.

Once this was done, Geodude turned to Diglett. He muttered something to him, and the two discussed something briefly, glancing at Ajax occasionally as well Espi as if judging their strength. Geodude seemed to be trying to persuade Diglett into doing something, while Diglett wasn't sure whether it would be a good idea. Finally Diglett nodded.

► Espi perked up eagerly at the idea of a battle, happy that the two had suggested it. She wanted to test her skills as soon as possible, and she wasn't afraid to start on these shifting sands. Tail bristling, she looked at Ajax and pawed the ground eagerly. "Ajax, let me try! I want to get stronger!" Ajax frowned, knowing that things were going to come to this. Again, he'd have preferred that he could have started training Espi in a more sheltered place, but she'd have to do something difficult at some time. Perhaps he could make things a little more even, though. "Sure." he said calmly. "Be careful though okay Espi? " He picked a ball from his belt and tossed it out. «

► The red and white capsule flashed in the white sun before it opened to release red light. As the ball bounced back to Ajax's hand, he watched as the red light cleared to reveal his Horsea (who also needed training), Weedy. Sevone, rather. He really would get a name change as soon as Ajax found a Name Rater. Weedy squinted as he looked around at the bright sand, curling his tail eagerly. "Ooohhhh~! A-jay! So nice to be out and about! Why is it so shiny and hot?" the Horsea asked, the fin on his back wiggling this way and that. He noticed Espi and the Geodude and Diglett. "Whoa, it's Espi, the new team member! And some friends! Wowie, you're so good! I'd never be able to walk so quickly if I got a fin offed--not like I can walk anyway," the Horsea added with a wink, 'swimming' over to nuzzle Espi affectionately. "Hmm, from the looks of it I guess we're double battling?" he waved happily at Diglett and Geodude. Ajax nodded. "If everyone's ready we can go ahead and begin, here's fine. Espi, don't hesitate to call out if you need a Potion or something though," he said. The shiny Zigzagoon nodded, looking towards Geodude and Diglett with a determined nod and a somewhat fiery expression--she wanted to badly to show that just because she was missing a leg, she wouldn't be a hinderance to the team. «

Both Geodude and Diglett were pleased that Ajax had accepted the battle, even the modest and shier Diglett seeming to be excited about getting some action with fighting. The two watched as Ajax chose his Pokémon, wondering which he would choose and hoping that it wouldn't leave them at a disadvantage. A lot of trainers relied on type advantages, but Diglett and Geodude both knew that there would come a time where being trained to deal with type disadvantages would be useful, which was when those who relied on types would fail.

Espi seemed keen to fight, and Ajax seemed happy to let her. That was good, it showed that this boy was willing to let his Pokémon do what they wanted to even if that meant putting himself at a disadvantage. Geodude smiled, admiring the 'morph even more for that simple thing. A Horsea emerged, apparantly the other Pokémon to be their opponent. While he would have a type advantage, the two sort of balanced each other out. All in all, this was a fair fight and so a more exciting one.

Geodude decided to start things off with a nice simple move, charging at Espi with his slow speed in a Tackle attack. It was to be expected that he would be slow, as his species naturally weren't very fast like most Rock types. He hoped this would hit but couldn't be sure, his good attack and defence made up for by poor speed. This move was more to test Espi to see how much he could expect of her in future than anything else. Diglett, meanwhile, used a Scratch, for the same reason. ((sorry being dragged off))

► Espi jumped, being attacked by both Pokemon on the first move. Ajax quickly realized that this was to gauge her strength. Normally he would have allowed her to take the hits so they would underestimate her, but he didn’t want her to lose confidence and somehow all-round thought that would be a bad idea. ”Duck to the side, Espi!” he called out, but the little Zigzagoon was already scrabbling through the sand, spurred on by instinct. She managed to avoid Geodude’s Tackle, but was hit smartly in the side by Diglett’s faster Scratch. The attack disbalanced her and but she used the motion to roll over and quickly back up. However, it was easy to see that the disbalance was due to her missing limb. Ajax was impressed; obviously, he didn’t like the fact that she was being disbalanced so easily, but he liked her speedy improvisation in getting back to her feet—most Pokemon would have simply flopped over. Mental note, he told to himself, work on balance during training. “Try to use your tail to balance yourself next time, but nice job getting up,” he called out with a suggestion and support. «

► Now for offense. This would be the hard part, since all of Espi’s moves would hardly put a scratch on Geodude, so she’d have to focus on Diglett. Weedy was standing by, puzzled since he had been pretty much ignored during the opening move. The good thing was that Espi had some supporting moves that affected both foes at once. ”Espi, use Growl! Weedy, use Bubble,” he yelled, knowing that the attacks would hit both Geodude and Diglett. Espi obeyed quickly, snarling loudly in the direction of the wild Pokémon, her glinting fur bristling on end. Weedy obeyed as well, piping ”Whoop-de-doo~!” and letting loose a large burst of bubbles that sprayed outward towards the two Ground-type Pokémon. «

Geodude could understand why his attack had missed and Digglett's hadn't, but at the same time he was a little annoyed at how the mole Pokémon was faster than him, wanting to be able to overcome the usual slowness of Rock types naturally and be fast. At least he had a good attack and defense, he supposed. Diglett seemed a little more calm about the whole thing, doing his best to remain entirely focused on the battle so that he could perform to his best.

The Growl affected them first, lowering both Pokémon's attack stats a little. Geodude noticed that Diglett seemed to be noticing everything good or bad that happened in this battle but not letting it get to his head, and tried to do the same with less success than his friend. It was the Bubble that really caused the problem, dealin out a super effective hit for both of them. The Water type move stung painfully against their skin, both gritting their teeth as they tried to brace themselves against the pain.

Geodude made a note to look out for Bubble attacks in future. Perhaps one of them could jump to protect the other; that way only one of them would take the damage. It seemed like a reasonable idea to him, and he felt that it was bound to be used again at sone point in this battle. This turn, he went for Espi again, hopigthat Diglett would aim at Weedy; the only offensive moves he knew were Rock types aside from Tackle, except Magnitude which would hit Diglett if used. He picked up a good load of medium sized rocks from seemingly out of nowhere, the proceeded to lob these as hard as he possibly could at the shiny in a Rock Throw.

Diglett saw Geodude looking at Espi and turned to Weedy, understanding that all his offensive moves aside from Scratch were Ground types, and so would have some affect on the Horsea. He moved quickly towards his target. It was unsure what move he would use until he lunged out with a Mud-Slap too quocky to tell what he was slapping with; his head, possibly, but you never knew, it could have been a paw or whatever was underground.

► Espi saw Geodude pick up the rocks and tried to get away from where she was standing as fast as possible, but it the sand slipped under her paws and she was caught by the attack. Geodude’s aim had been good, too. The first rock landed on her tail and she let out a loud huff of breath as another landed on her side, knocking some breath out of her lungs. Thankfully, the sliding sand helped her wriggle out from under the rocks. Ajax grimaced; the attack had been pretty efficient, but he couldn’t think of a counterattack. It wasn’t like Espi had any special-type moves to break the rocks with. And if Weedy knocked the rocks back, he’d be leaving himself open to Diglett. Weedy was yelling about mud in his eyes, so the Scizor ‘morph supposed that Diglett’s move had scored as well. «

► Drat. He could feel himself getting angry and hotheaded, but really didn’t want to scare Espi. ”Espi…keep on Diglett! Tail Whip…Headbutt,” he all but choked out. Nyx calmly picked up a small rock and placed it between his two pincers; the ‘morph crushed it with his claw, glad to have the distraction to work his momentary stress out on. If only Espi would stick to Diglett and Weedy would keep to Geodude, things would be much better. The Bubble technique had worked really well, at least, and he reminded himself to use it later in the battle. ”And Weedy, Smokescreen and Bubblebeam on Geodude.” With Espi’s disadvantage, he’d be needing all the debuffing moves that he could fairly use. «

► The shiny Zigzagoon shook herself free of sand, gingerly patting her back leg against the ground. She loped several meters to the side nearer to where Diglett was, but faced both Pokemon as she wagged her tail cutely at them, aiming to lower their defenses. Then she launched herself at Diglett, lowering her head in a Headbutt. Meanwhile, Weedy backpedaled towards Geodude, blowing out first a thick black cloud of smoke and then a steady stream of hard-hitting bubbles. At least the Mud-Slap hadn’t affected his accuracy too much—yet. Ajax waited, tense, for the results of the moves.«

Diglett was surprised at how quickly Espi had reacted to his attack, the Tail Whip lowering both his defense stat and Geodude's. He could see the drop in the stat distracting his fighting partner briefly from battle, and moved to try and help when the Headbutt struck, the powerful move making impact with the mole's side painfully. The force pushed him aside a short distance, although it did not push him into the air. Surely a Diglett must have been pulled out of the ground at some point, but it was strange how people rarely saw and didn't really know what was beneath their head.

The Defense Curl distracted Geodude, but a distraction wasn't really needed considering that he was then blinded by a cloud of black smoke from the Smokescreen. Urgh, just perfect. His eyes stung and watered as the move lowered his accuracy; although he was aware that Smokescreen would temporarily hide their part of the battle from anyone's view, including Weedy's, it would soon clear but his accuracy would still be decreased. The Bubblebeam struck him easily, making him cry out in pain from the super effective hit before realising that might be a giveaway as to where he was and so began floating silently in a different direction, eyes fixed on the point the Bubblebeam had come from. As the smoke began to clear, he was aware he should probably make a move.

Diglett was aware that future attacks would hurt a little bit more because of his defense being lowered, and so to counter it used a Growl, hoping to lower the attack stats of his opponents to balance out the differents. Less powerful moves on more vunerable targets meant normally damaging outcomes unless of course types were taken into account. Thinking about that, he then began to burrow underground in a Dig attack. He could easily sense the vibrations through the earth to find where Espi was, used to tracking Pokémon from underground by now. If Espi tried to use an attack this turn, there was no way it could hit, plus he'd get an easy attack out of this next turn.

Curling into a ball, Geodude quickly raised his defense stat back up to normal before trying to see if he could locate his opponent. Weedy had to be there somewhere, but it was difficult to tell spots where the smoke was thicker from the shaded spot that must be Weedy. The Horsea had to be in there somewhere, and Geodude would rather try than just give up, since that way he had at least some chance of dealing damage, however small that chance was. Picking a roughly seahorse-shaped shaded spot, he sent another Rock Throw in that direction.

► Ajax nodded, pleased as Weedy and Espi both hit powerfully spot-on with their moves. Weedy did a midair sommersault to show his pleasure, while Espi simply crouched lower to the ground and waited for Diglett’s next move, nervous and not wanting to be distracted. Both Pokemon shivered slightly as Diglett used Growl—now any advantage they would have gotten with the Tail Whip would be pretty much negated. Even worse, Ajax spotted Diglett slowly sinking underground, evidently digging to try a stealth attack. He was sure that Espi would be the target—the way she was limping around heavily, she would practically be a sitting duck. It would have been best if they could trick Geodude into using Magnitude, but Ajax was sure the ground-type wouldn’t be so stupid. «

► From somewhere in the smoke, Weedy yeeped as a rock came barreling down to hit him in the side. Another cracked down on one of his fins. However, the managed to evade the worst of the attack, and he backed up gingerly, letting the smoke fade away so he could see Geodude properly (of course, although Geodude’s accuracy was down, now Geodude could see him). Ajax had to decide what to do quickly; Diglett could come up any minute now. "Espi, Sand-Attack at Geodude. Then get away and stay on your toes—the moment Diglett comes up, use a double Sand-Attack on him. Weedy, if Diglett comes up under you, Bubblebeam. For now though, Focus Energy and Bubblebeam at Geodude.” Weedy nodded and obeyed quickly, closing his eyes and glowing briefly as his focus was raised, then floating towards Geodude and releasing a thick stream of bubbles from his small snout. Espi, however, took longer. She was a little hurt that Ajax hadn’t asked her to use an offensive move, but she had faith in him. She ran up to Geodude and whisked her tail across the ground, spraying sand in his direction, then backed up a little and tried to move lightly across the ground (though this was relatively futile due to her bad leg), nervously watching the sand for any sign of Diglett. «

At first, Geodude had felt that Diglett's using Dig attack was a good thing. Now, however, he was not quite so sure. It seemed that, wit one target missing, both of Ajax's Pokémon were deciding to pick on him. Fair enough, he supposed, since he couldn't expect them to just hang around doing nothing for a whole turn rather than making the most of not having Diglett about, but it was still annoying. The powerful Bubblebeam hit, making him stagger from the force and pain of the super effective hit. He was feeling weak now, but gritted his teeth and kept going. He didn't want Diglett thinking he was a wimp or anything, after all!

The Sand-Attack took Geodude completely by surprise as he was busy being annoyed about the Bubblebeam. Diglett could sense all this through the vibrations in the ground, and smiled to himself. He, or a trainer if Geodude was caught, he didn't mind, had a lot to teach the Geodude. A lot could be learned from experience, but a lot could also be learned from others. It seemed to him that Geodude needed to learn to remain constantly focused, like he was pretty certain Espi was.

Speaking of Espi, she was his target; predictable, really, but he wasn't targeting her because of her leg. He'd seen that she was reasonable capable without a leg. He was targeting her because she wasn't able to use a super effective move in retaliation to a sudden attack from underground. He burrowed directly underneath her, taking care to leave no clue as to where he was on the surface, then reached directly upwards at an astonishing speed to attack his opponent with the Dig attack.

Geodude wasn't sure what to do. There wasn't much he could do, was there? A lot of his attacks would be weak against Weedy, but he supposed he would just have to deal with it and carry on. The main problem was that he couldn't see so well, since he had had his accuracy lowered twice. He used a quick Defense Curl for better protection against future attacks, then launched into a Rock Throw aimed at the Horsea. It wasn't perticualy accurate for obvious reasons, but he hoped that at least some of the chunks of rock would strike their target.

► It was good to see that both attacks had hit Geodude, but the Scizor ‘morph was getting more and more nervous by the second. He was really sure that Diglett was going to target Espi and it really made him nervous. The claws on his feet curled and uncurled around the sand, as he waited. Espi could sense this, and she tried in vain to move from place to place and tread as lightly as possible, but while she was a fast learner, she had, after all, been out from the operation table for about a day or two. Weedy, too, tried to keep an eye on everything, even ignoring Geodude for a few moments to scan Espi as well as the ground. «

► As Diglett erupted out from under Espi, multiple things happened at once. Weedy cried out, "Nooo!!!" as he watched the exceptionally powerful blow literally throw the Zigzagoon into the air. Espi gasped as Diglett’s head connected with her stomach. She had attempted to hit her tail on the ground as he attacked, but he was faster and had the element of surprise; her tail curled in midair, becoming more of a Tail Whip attack than a Sand-Attack. As this all happened, there was a blur of motion on the sidelines and Nyx, almost in sync with Weedy, barked out: ”NO!” And as quickly as it had started, Espi had fallen back to the ground and Ajax was frozen, staring at her—practically in the middle of the battlefield with sand and dust fading from around him. Weedy’s eyes widened with surprise as Nyx stared in askance at her human, all nine tails flared around her. «

► Ajax’s heart was beating like a jackhammer, but within moments he had realized his mistake. How…embarrassing. ”Aaagh!” he yelled, zipping off the battlefield back to a safe distance from the fight. At least nothing had actually hit him. He panicked, gaze darting from the startled Weedy to the winded Espi, not exactly sure what to say except, ”Weedy, protect her!” The Horsea kicked himself (minus the kicking) into action hearing this. He wasn’t exactly sure what he was supposed to do, but his good judgment saved some of Ajax’s blunder. He rushed away from Geodude, managing to dodge the Rock Throw despite an aching fin, and placed himself between the ground types and the shiny Zigzagoon, using first Smokescreen in a circle around (but not on) Espi to hide her position, then using Bubble in the general direction of his two opponents. Meanwhile, Espi slowly shook herself and got to her paws, letting out a heavy breath. The Dig had taken a sizable chunk of her HP. «
