Mizuki approached the training area quietly. Ever since the Tsuasa infiltration, she had been feeling a bit tense. She'd gotten herself captured; how dumb was that? She couldn't allow that to happen again. From now on, it would probably be safer if she kept one or more Pokemon outside of their Pokeballs just in case.
But what if they weren't strong enough? She'd just been about to enter a Gym battle in the first town when she had heard about the commotion and decided to get in on it. If her team wasn't even strong enough to earn one badge, how could they protect her in times of need?
Growling angrily, she clentched her fists. She was going to be the best trainer she could be, and in order to do that, she needed to start training her team longer and harder so that they could hold their own. Karasu shifted uncomfortably; he knew how upset she was. She had just ended up being a liability. Training was her way of venting her rage at how useless she had been.
Her six Pokemon emerged from their Pokeballs, ready for their next training session. Sneasel stood faithfully at her side, Drifloon hovered anxiously next to her, Vulpix was curled up behind Sneasel, Pidgey perched on her shoulder, Sunkern was in her arms as usual, and Shinx looked ready for anything and everything on her other side.
"Look," she started, getting everyone's attention, "as you probably know, I got captured when I attempted to do my mission. Such a thing was dangerous and foolish, and as such, it would be best if I had strong Pokemon out of their Pokeballs and helping me at all times. However, you aren't quite strong enough."
"I'm not saying you're weak," she continued, noticing Shinx's crestfallen look. "It's just that you all have the potential to get stronger. All we need to do is practice. If we can beat the eight Gym Leaders, we'll be ready for anything. Right now, we need to prepare to fight the first. We were about to when we got interrupted by this little side-quest, and now we can use this time for preparation."
"Sneasel, I want you to try and hit Pidgey with an Ice Punch. Pidgey, I want you to dodge for as long as you can possibly manage. Vulpix, Drifloon, I want you two to do the same thing, but with Ember. For now, I'll take the Charcoal back so that Drifloon doesn't get too badly hurt." Vulpix passed her the item, which she then placed in her bag.
"Shinx and Sunkern, you two are the only ones left to partner up. Sunkern, I want you to try and hit Shinx with your Absorb attack, and I want Shinx to try and dodge it. This last part goes for all of you; keep it up until someone gets hit. First one out has to run two laps. Dismissed." And with that, their training began in earnest. Mizuki lay down on the grass and watched the clouds go by, thinking to herself.

A yelp got her attention about fifteen minutes later. "Shinx just got hit," Karasu reported from his new pearch in a nearby tree.
"He's always been more focused on attacking than dodging. He's going to have to learn not to get excited over every little hit; he can celebrate when he wins," she commented. Sunkern happily bounced up to her mommy cheering while Shinx simply sulked.
"Hey, you did better than I thought you'd do. No need to make that face," she said unemotionally. It was enough to cheer him up, though, and he started running around in circles again.
Vulpix came over a few minutes later, tired but successful. Drifloon didn't look too much worse for wear, except for a little mark where he got hit. "You two did great," she told them.
Finally, Sneasel approached, carrying a Pidgey with a frozen wing. "Forgive me for taking so long," she said with a bow.
"That's fine. It's tough to hit a Flying-type Pokemon with a move that requires direct contact like Ice Punch. Every one of you did well. However..."
"I know, I know; two laps," Shinx grumbled like a spoiled child.
"You'll get stronger from it; count on it," she told him as he took off. Everyone else collapsed from how tired they were, so Mizuki lay down again and they all watched the clouds together, Shinx joining them once he had finished his run.
