Liz, Rhys and Seraphina, as the torchic had decided she wanted to be called, didn't go straight away to Route One. They had decided they wanted to wander the town a little first, perhaps even spend the night in the local pokemon center and start out in the morning. There was another thing they wanted to do as well. Liz had spotted what she thought was a training field when she and Rhys had walked through the town to reach the pokemon lab in the first place. It had seemed to all of them the prudent thing to do some training and getting to know each other before heading out onto the road. Though they were all filled with the excitement of what they were planning to do, Rhys' caution had won out and they were looking for the training field to learn what Sera could do.
When they found it, the trio had to stop and stare a moment. The training field was a marvellous place. Clearly, whom ever had set it up, had known what they were doing. There were obstacle courses suited of all types of pokemon, targets for practise which seemed made of materiel which should be resistant to damage from most types of pokemon attack, and a wide variety of them to provide a challenge for pokemon of any level. Liz looked down at Sera with a wild grin and the torchic looked back with an equally pleased look. This was going to be fun.
Liz decided that they should start with target practise. Sera had confessed to knowing Flameburst, which was a ranged attack. "Alright, lets start with the solid targets" The woman said as Sera set herself up at the range. Opening her beak, a ball of fire formed before the torchic. She let it grow, before she launched it at the target. The first attack went wide, striking the barrier behind the targets in an explosion of flame. "Try it again Sera" Liz encouraged. The torchic nodded and once again launched a ball of fire at the target. This time it hit the edge of the target, the flames from the explosion licking around the round target and the edges of the target next to it.
"Keep going" It was Rhys this time who spoke the words of encouragement. Slowly, Seraphim's aim improved, Flameburst after Flameburst impacting the target. By the end, she was hitting the center of the target nearly every time. For their first training session, it was a good result. ~What's next?~ Sera asked when Elizabeth signalled her to stop.
Liz and Rhys exchanged a look before they said, at the same moment "Scratch". They had practised Sera's long range attack. Time for close quarters combat. There were a set of heavy wooden pillars and logs scattered through an area nearby, the deep scorings in the wood saying clearly without words that these were used to practise scratch and other similar attacks. Liz directed the torchic to them, taking a moment to push fallen strands of pink hair back behind her ears. "Alright Sera, give it a go"
The torchic's first attempt did not go so well. Her claws gleamed in the light, but the moment she lifted her foot to strike at the log in front of her, she overbalanced, toppling to the side with a loud squeak of surprise. Liz rushed forward, the human reaching out and helping the young fire type back to her feet. "Okay. Not quite as we might have hoped. Try again?" Seraphina nodded in response to her trainer's words. This time, when she went to attack the log, she pushed forward with one leg while she brought the other up, turning as she lashed out with the scratch attack.
"Yes!" Liz called out as long marks appeared in the log where Sera had struck. "Well done" Rhys' calmer tone encouraged their new partner. "Try it again" Sera nodded determinedly and did as the meganium daemon suggested. Each time she struck the log with her scratch attack she was a little bit faster with it, each time her balance was that bit more secure. While she was hardly perfect, by the time Liz called an end to the training, Seraphina had definitely improved in her use of those skills she had at her disposal.
There was only one move left to train now. There was young boy with a growlithe daemon and a meowth who were looking to practise their own non-damaging attacks. They faced off against each other, bare dirt between the scratch cat pokemon and the chick pokemon. Sera went first, a low growling coming from deep in her chest. The meowth's answering growl was a higher pitch than Sera's almost more of a whine than a true growl. Sera replied back with another low growl, the torchic listening to Liz and Rhys as the pair encouraged her to put as much menace as possible into the sound. It took time, lots of time, but eventually the two pokemon found their strides, the meowth's growls now actually sounding like growls, while Seraphina managed to work an impressive amount of menace into the sounds she made.
When they were done, Liz thanked the boy and his meowth, and then she, Rhys and Seraphina, left the training area. It was getting late, enough so that, after a bit of discussion, they decided to get a room at the pokemon center for the night, rather than walk out onto the route with night falling around them.
