Terra had to catch three buses today to get to Pine Labs. Her Mamma was still very worried, but the crops needed her care today as Jonathan was sick and no one could accompany Terra. Terra had to insist she was a big girl now and that she would be ok, but nothing seemed to stop her Mamma's worrying. But in the end her Mamma relented, gave her a big kiss and told Terra to go before she changed her mind.
Terra left her home smiling. There were a lot of bus stops to get to Pine Labs - She had to change buses three times too! Terra hadn't been this far from home before, so it was all a wonder to her eyes as she settled in on an empty seat. She put Adara's purple suitcase beside her, telling anyone who enquired that this seat was indeed taken. Terra didn't want Adara to sit up in the luggage locker or in the bottom of the bus. The bus driver came to offer her a hand putting the suitcase in the luggage carrier above her head, but Terra looked at the bus driver with the most horrified look. Terra shook her head no, giving the bus driver a pleading look as she spoke. "I promised Mamma not to let Adara go anywhere without me." Terra's big round eyes locked onto the drivers as she reached down to pull the bag close to her, clutching it tightly. Her eyes began to waver and quiver, threatening tears as the driver reached for the bag insisting. But this checked any urge he had to command the child. He was suddenly hotly aware that several passengers were watching him now with interest and that Terra was beginning to sob quietly.
Terra was really afraid. She didn't know what might happen if she lost Adara. If they got separated, would Adara hurt? Could she die? The doctor didn't know and nor did she. She just knew that Adara was quiet and weak and needed her more than anything.
The bus rides were long, eventually lulling Terra into a contorted sleep against a little pillow rested on her window. She had Adara's case held between her knees snugly. The driver came to wake her, telling her this was his last stop and Pine Labs. Terra looked up at him, yawning as she tried to thank him. She had to rub away the sleep in her eyes, before she gathered her bag and Adara's and trundled down off the bus towards the doors of the lab. Terra stepped inside, lifting her case over the door frame. She was surprised to see what looked like the doctors room here. She had expected a lot more strange machines and people. Not an empty waiting room. Terra looked about, wondering if she had to wait or if she should announce herself. But not wanting to be rude, Terra decided to wait, taking a look at all the strange things about the room.
