"..are the free ones." Maia mused, prowling alongside Jake with his tail in the air. "I mean, no doubt about it. If you don't have to give anything for it, no matter what it is, it must be good." Jake raised an eyebrow.
"Are you sure? I mean, just because it's free, that doesn't automatically mean-"
"Especially the ones in those darling little sample boxes with the bows on top." Maia continued, ignoring him completely. "Those are too cute, honestly. I mean, think about it. If you're getting something for nothing, then it's an infinite return. If you pay something, even if what you pay is a tiny fraction of the value of what you get, it's still not as good value as if it's completely free. And now we're going to get a free starter." He giggled to himself. "Free things you don't pay for are the best kind."
"They're the only kind."
"Or are they?" The dæmon rounded on Jake, wagging a paw. "What about those sneaky accountants or whatever, that promise you free this and free that and interest, but later you have to pay them exponential amounts. Those are the worst kind of people," he trilled, flicking his tail agitatedly. "Honestly. It's no way at all to run a business, is it?"
Jake tried to get his head around the logic of this for a little while, before giving up. "Anyway, it's not as if this is completely free. Signing up for team Tsuasa means a lifetime of service. It's like a job. This is just a complementary gift, or wh-"
"Oh, I can't wait to see all the sweet little darlings!" Maia cut him off again, spinning happily in a circle. "We have to choose a nice one, understand? Oh, it'll be just like having a little sister! And we can have sleepovers, and talk about boys, and read magazines, and do each other's hair-"
"I don't know that it'll be quite like that..."
"Oh, stop being such a doom-bringer." Maia pouted. "Come on, we're all dolled up for it, too. We have to get something good."
It was true, actually; in his efforts to make a good impression, Jake had made a careful effort to choose his best clothes. After extensive advice from Maia, he'd put on a plain black tee, a grey gilet and some jeans. Nothing too outgoing (though he'd insisted on gelling his hair back in order to try and make it look 'cool', though it more resembled a hedgehog who'd been shoved through a wind tunnel). Maia had, he'd been asserted, gone for a natural look, with his claws a sombre red to outline his delicate paws, and a light eyeliner. He'd also shampooed his fur last night, and now it blew and fluffed out just so in the wind.
Margaret was trailing along a little way behind the pair, dress fluttering a little like it always did in the wind that only she could feel. She was, to be honest, feeling a little bit left out; she wasn't sure what she would do now that Jake was joining team Tsuasa. Stay in the baracks, she supposed; but Jake would have less free time now, and she'd start getting lonely again. She gave a weak sigh, fiddling with a lock of pale hair. No use moping about it, anyway. She ran over to Jake, patting at his shoulder. Have you thought about what kind of Pokemon you want?
Jake said 'probably a flying type' at exactly the same time Maia said 'the cutest little dear they have'; the latter promptly huffed, turning away from Margaret and muttering something under his breath. The girl made a noise that inexplicably sounded like a wilting plant, patting at her dress. Well, you'll have to make your minds up. Look, we're almost here.
Jake glanced up in alarm. He hadn't been paying attention to the building slowly creeping up on them. Trying to hide his nervousness, he walked in, shoulders slowly creeping upwards in a nervous hunch. Maia had no such qualms, slinking in next to him and gazing around.
"Ooh, it is nice in here. Hello? We're here to register for the team!" Jake hadn't the heart to point out the registration desk a few yards away.
