Luke probably made a rather odd sight as he walked out of the recruitment centre. His Ditto Daemon Akira was, as usual, settled on one shoulder while Nova, his Torchic, was happily perched on the other. Used to carrying around Akira, the short young man barely noticed the added weight of the first member of his team. Glancing sideways at the fluffy fire type Luke smiled. “What do you say we do a bit of training before we go get a mission?” He wanted to get a feel for what Nova could do before putting them all into a potentially dangerous situation. He’d overheard some of the other grunts talking about their missions as they walked by and while he knew something like that probably wouldn’t be given to someone who had just joined the organisation; it was better safe than sorry.
Nova grinned and leapt from Luke’s shoulder, landing neatly on the ground, spinning slightly to keep her balance. ~Training!~ the Torchic was clearly excited at the prospect of getting to show her human just how strong she was. Akira chuckled softly as she watched the cheery little fire type trotting in circles around Luke as the boy made his way to a nice flat area where there was nothing that might accidentally catch fire. Not that Nova knew any fire type moves yet. But better safe than sorry, wouldn’t do to set fire to the base on their first day. Perhaps after a week or so… But certainly not on the first day.
“Ok!” Luke spun in a circle in the area he’d selected “This look good?” Torchic nodded and after climbing up onto Luke’s hat to get a better look, so did Akira “This place looks good Luke” The ditto daemon said. “Ok… ummm…” A confused look came over the human’s face “I don’t actually know where to start…” Akira rolled her eyes. Clearly she would have to handle this. “Nova?” The daemon called out to the Torchic “What moves do you know?” ~Growl, Scratch and Crush Claw!~ the fire type stated proudly. “Crush Claw?” Luke sounded surprised when Akira mentioned that one “That’s not a normal move for a Torchic” He looked Nova over more closely “Guess you must have some Zangoose or Sandslash in you somewhere” Nova shrugged, she didn’t know or really care where she got it from, she just knew she knew how to use it, though it was kind of nice to know she knew something the average Torchic didn’t. Having something extra on the battle field, something that an opponent might not be expecting was always good in her opinion.
“Well…” Luke said with a shrug as well “I guess we’ll start with Growl” ~Yay!~ Luke didn’t need a translation to know what Nova had just said, the look of excitement was more than enough to know that it was an exclamation of happiness. “Right… I guess... you just go for it?” He sounded rather hesitant, obviously uncertain that he was doing things the right way. The way Nova bounced about said that even if he wasn’t the torchic didn’t mind.
The torchic settled down, both feet planted firmly on the ground as she turned to face Luke and Akira. Her beak opened and a low growling sound came from her small body. Luke thought it was odd, to hear a sound like that coming from a pokemon who looked like a chicken. It was pretty good though, loud enough to be easily heard, without being deafening, and clearly signalling that the pokemon making the noise was a threat. When Nova broke off and looked up at Luke the boy grinned “That was great Nova! Wanna try it again?” The Torchic nodded and growled again, holding the sound for longer this time.
“Awesome! Wanna try scratch?” Nova bobbed up and down in response. She liked scratch! “Hmm… Something to practise on… something to practise on” Luke muttered to himself as he looked about the clearing, trying to find something for Akira to practise her attacks on other than himself. He didn’t much fancy the idea of being a pincushion just so the torchic could practise scratching things. Spotting a decent sized tree which should stand up to the attack, he pointed it out to the pokemon “Nova! Use Scratch on the tree!” The torchic gave Akira a look as if to ask Is he serious?. The ditto shaped Daemon nodded and the torchic turned back to the tree. It was a very big tree.
Nova walked determinedly up to the tree. She’d have preferred something smaller to practise on, but if this was what Luke wanted her to sue, this was what she would use. Besides, she supposed it would stand her in good stead for when she was battling opponents bigger than she was to practise on this tree. She lifted a foot and wriggled her clawed toes before she sprang into the air, spinning as she raked her claws over the bark, leaving a series of gouges behind.
Luke grinned as he inspected the marks Nova had left “Well done Nova! Give it another shot, see if you can make them deeper” Nova nodded and whirled again, this time without jumping, putting a bit more force behind her attack. The scratches were deeper but she wasn’t satisfied. Luke had asked her to make them deeper and she knew she could do better than that. The torchic moved several steps around the tree and attacked again, putting even more force behind the attack. She repeated this over and over, until the tree was covered in deep marks.
“Nova!” Luke calling her name pulled the torchic out of the state of deep concentration she had entered. “I think that’s probably enough scratch practice” The boy sounded amused. The Nova turned around and saw the state of the tree, the little torchic blushed. She hadn’t meant to do that, she’d just gotten so caught up in the training and showing Luke just how good she was, that she’d gotten a bit carried away.
“I found this for Crush Claw Practise” He said pointing to a large branch he’d pulled into the clear space. ~And we couldn’t have found this and used it for scratch practice? Instead of making me take on that tree.~ Nova sounded disbelieving. Akira snorted at the fire type’s comment while Luke remained cheerfully oblivious, since he didn’t speak pokemon. “Because you knocked it down when you were using scratch on the Tree” Akira told the torchic. Luke looked confused at the exchange but dismissed it as his pokemon having asked a question about where the branch had come from.
“Ok, Nova, hit it with Crush Claw!” Nova just stared at Luke for a moment, wondering just what was going through the trainers blond head, before turning, her claws glowing a bright white-blue as she sliced deep marks through the wood, far deeper than the scratch attacks on the tree. It was to be expected though. Crush Claw was a far more powerful attack than Scratch was. “Again!” Luke called to her and this time Nova attacked with the other foot. “Again!” four more times they repeated this, Luke calling out to attack and Nova hitting the branch for all she was worth.
“Well done Nova!” Luke knelt to pet the torchic, Nova leaning into the caresses. “Now, Dodging practise. We’ve done your attack skills, but Akira thinks Dodging will be important too and I have to agree with her.” Luke stood back up and moved to the edge of the clearing, pulling out a pair of small rubber bouncy balls. “So. I’ve got two of these and Akira’s on the other side of the clear with another two. Their made of pretty soft rubber, so it shouldn’t actually hurt if you get hit. Maybe sting a little, but no actual hurt, But the point is not to get hit at all, even if it won’t hurt you”
Nova nodded her understanding, and at that moment one bouncy ball went whizzing past her head. The torchic jerked to her left, only to have to duck to her right as another went whizzing past. She jumped over a third, only to be hit by the fourth. Luke had been right, they were surprisingly soft. That didn’t change the fact that she felt a little disappointed in herself for having been hit in the first place. Another hit made Nova pull her attention back to what she was doing in time to dodge a ball aimed at her feet and another aimed at her stomach.
Wondering where the second set of balls were coming from, The torchic spun as she avoided the next ball thrown at her, seeing the ditto shaped daemon behind her, one long slender tendril formed from her easily mouldable body, catching and throwing the balls just as the Human was doing. She the torchic stopped, she did so half way between Luka and Akira, so she could keep an eye on both of those throwing the items to be dodged. When the pair worked oout what was done, they collected the balls, two each just as they had started with, and this time they didn’t throw them at Nova. “Well Done Nova” This time it was Akira who congratulated the Torchic “You worked it out.”
Luke grinned at the pokemon “How are you feeling?” He asked ~Great!~ she chirped. When Akira translated Luke’s grin got wider “Ok. Do you want to rest a bit, or shall we go get our first mission? It’s still pretty early. Akira and I started out just after breakfast, so it’ll be just after lunch time by now.” Nova shook her head at the idea of resting and clearly nodded her head at the idea of going and getting a mission. Luke nodded back “Off we go then!” The short boy lead the way back to the Tsuasa Headquarters and the mission center.
